Catwalk Chat…(or a reality check….)

Filed under: Thoughts — katie @ 5:45 pm

Whilst we may all secretly think we look like Kate Moss, reality is that every season throws up some crazy ideas of what they think you should be wearing …. And like lemmings, we dutifully follow…. And regularly get it wrong!

No 1 rule of fashion – buy what suits and works for you – not what you think you should buy – Winter means invest in classic timeless pieces and skint on high fashion – think Nicole Fahri for the coat and New Look for the jodphurs!!

So to help you all along the road to successful spending, What a Girl Needs has come up with some tips, advice and general all round money saving ways to help you through the minefield that is NEW SEASON!!

Should it be skinny or wide, high waist or hips, long and lean or short and swing, purple or fuschia (very scary and approach with caution!!)

So What’s In…. (or so they say…..)

Fitted Jackets – waisted and in leather  – choose what works for you with dress, skinny trousers or jeans

Jeans – hurrah!  Wide or skinny (if in doubt go wide - suits all – skinny if you’re skinny and over 5’8”)

Shoe Boots or Ankle biters - so now, but so hard to get right…

Mad for patent - bags and shoes…

Body conscious dressing - stretch fabrics and clever panelling to shape our bodies…Black is back – as if it ever went away…

Belts - wide or skinny - belt in at the waist - lengthens your legs, add style to any outfit …

Bags - they’re everywhere - useful, roomy, on-trend, shiny, buckles, chains….

Shoes and boots  – well the highs are high and the lows are low…. sleek, high, sexy and glamourous, shiny  - platforms, flats, points, round – pretty much anything goes!!!!!!

Designers  we’re loving this season (starting with the obvious but in no particular order!!!)

1.                  Prada and Louboutin – for shoes
2.                  Miu Miu – for bags
3.                  Stella McCartney – for knitwear
4.                  Chloe – for those black boots!!!
5.                  Donna Karan – for pure classics
6.                  Et Vous – for French boyfriend chic (available at Anna – Primrose Hill)
7.                  Marni, Fendi, McQueen, Accessorize – for accessories
8.                  Top Shop and Mango – for great high street versions mixed with a bit of Zara
9.                  Nicole Farhi – for pure essentials
10.                Martin Grant and Lanvin – for evening class!!

And for token pattern princesses amongst you – Diane Von Furstenburg and Missoni!!!

It’s not rocket science – think and plan before you invest – one key piece is worth ten cheap imitations!!!!!

Do you know the way…

Filed under: Thoughts — katie @ 9:34 pm

Today is a very sad day - the departure of the Special One hit us hard… I have worn black as a mark of respect and even suggested sending a wreath to Stamford Bridge… football is a way of life in our house and it has only been made more bearable with the thought that whether at the game or on the tv, I was always able to have birds eye view of our favourite man in a Prada overcoat - I even paid £25 for one of those limited edition Armani black tshirts with the drawing of the coat…. now deservedly in a frame and going up in the office!

Roman has no idea - women across the land are hysterical today - husbands are shocked - and grumpy!  He moans that no-one went to the game on Tuesday…. fans staged a protest at Stamford Bridge - there will be an even bigger one at the next home game!

There is no return for Jose - the only thing that can improve the mood of the nation (or at least Chelsea fans!) is winning the league!  And then I think Jose should be given credit - because the players will do it for him!

So all there is left to say is…. “Didier pull your socks up, wipe away those tears and score my friend … just score!”

Football will never be the same… press conferences will be boring…. who will Fergie banter with now…

RIP Special One!  ( and maybe you will become England Manager - now that would swing it!!!!)

What a Boy Needs….

Filed under: Thoughts — katie @ 8:20 pm

Gosh we have been a little lapse in our blogging this week but good news is afoot which is has kept us all busy here at What a Girl Needs Towers - looming in the midst of festive madness is the welcome addition to the family - What a Boy Needs is slowly emerging as an entity in it’s own right!  Now before Christmas this will really entail being a small addition to the categories which means quite frankly some quite divine Christmas gifts for him indoors!

These include Urban Aid’s new Quick Getaway Kits for boys - (as if they need any more encouragement but there you go….), and the more grown up gifts including a very nice black leather telescope if he’s interested in the stars!!! (Nothing too saucy though before you all start wondering…….)   Seriously though, What a Boy Needs will evolve into its own being but currently girls rule and there aren’t enough hours in the day right now - but look out for more movement on this in the New Year!

And the other news of the day - What a Girl Needs opens it’s doors to the public from next week - now you can pop in to the “showroom” at 5 Mill Lane, Wallingford, OX10  (”showroom” as it will be called whilst we negotiate with the council……) - if you see something on the site or you are just passing, please feel free to pop in and pur-chase!!  Most of the stock will be on show and if not, then it’s really only in the storeroom upstairs!!

London Fashion Week this week - and we’re desperately looking for bags for next season - not impressed so far, so it had better come up trumps otherwise we will be forced to visit Paris again in October for Tranoi!!

It’s a Wonderful Life…. (not long before you can dust down your copy and get in the festive mood - 100 days till Xmas from today……….!!!!!!

Happy Shopping!!!

Jamie’s rant..

Filed under: Thoughts — katie @ 2:20 pm

Just sitting here listening to Radio 5 Live in the office whilst pontificating on new stock and we have decided that actually Jamie Oliver (who is currently guest with Simon Mayo) is quite eloquent now on the trials and tribulations of tube strikes, dinner ladies, politicians and anything else he cares to comment on and we now think that he is possible a new candidate for Mayor!  Think he’s got a new book out - currently raving about chillies - says they’re good for us and we should all be munching on fresh chillies!  Well I think you’re on your own there but hey!

What else is going on - did Autumn Fair yesterday and it was ok…..(and no Crocs in sight!  Hurrah!!!)  we did look at a fair amount of interiors and homewares and you will definately be seeing more of this on What a Girl Needs under new section coming called What a Girl Needs at home… and What a Boy Needs will actually have presents and ideas for Christmas - so boys, although you are meant to be purchasing for the wife, we suggest you keep an eye out over next few weeks as we have got some fab bits n pieces for you!!!

Paris looms at the end of the week and I shall resume my complete Belle de Jour look - the Roger’s will be out in full effect and it had better be good cos I am already trade showed out and we’ve only done 2!

Just an update on NIVEA - nearly at the end of my pot and I have to say, although a little light probably for the deluge of wrinkles that is me, I do like it and there is a certain Je ne Sais Quoi going on with my skin which I shall happily put down to oxygen reviving!  Just a reminder to hear what the rest of you think of it please!!!!!

 Happy Shopping…
